Can these animals really predict the weather in New York?

We have a ton of ways to find out what the weather is going to be like. But even with all these methods, it is not 100% safe. These animals might be able to help.

Here in New York, we can go from an 80 degree day to a 40 degree day in just a few hours. In a part of town you need your sunglasses because it’s so sunny. In the other part of town, they’re getting ready to bail out their basements because of a crazy storm that just passed.

Meteorologists spend their entire career trying to be as accurate as possible about the weather. But maybe they just need to ask the animals.

There are many people who believe that woolly bear caterpillars can actually tell you what winter will be like. All you have to do is watch them.

If you have ever seen a woolly bear caterpillar, you know that it is orange in color with black on each end of its body. The theory is that the amount of black or orange on their body will tell you how mild or harsh you can expect the winter to be.

So if he has more black on his body, the winter will be harsher. The more orange you see, the sweeter it is. But the cool thing about this graph is that it shows even when it can be tough. The orange is more towards the head? Winter will start mild but end harshly. If it’s more towards the back, be careful at the end of winter.

Can he though?

According to the National Weather Service…it’s a myth.

“The coloring of the woolly bear caterpillar is based on how long the caterpillar has been feeding, its age and its species. The better the growing season, the bigger it will grow. This results in red stripes -orange narrower in the middle. Thus banding width is an indicator of growth in the current or past season rather than an indicator of the severity of the coming winter.” – National Meteorological Service
