Jay-Z is one of the richest men in the music industry. Last year Forbes reported that he had an estimated wealth of over £1billion (add Beyoncé’s personal wealth and you’ve got the richest duo in the ‘biz), thanks in large part to their catalog of box-office albums closed, its investments in Roc Nation and the sale of its Armand De Brignac champagne brand to LVMH in February 2021.
One would then expect Jay-Z to have a wardrobe full of pieces that reflect his unimaginable wealth. He was the first person to rock Patek Philippe’s Tiffany and Co tie, and he has a fine collection of unique Rolex watches and Jacob and Co bracelets. The “Big Pimpin'” rapper got sharply cut suits from Dries Van Noten, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen, to name a few, while her daywear comes from up-and-coming luxury label Rhude.
On the other hand, Jay-Z also has a penchant for budget sneakers that you don’t need to have sold over 50 million records to get your hands on. Case in point: Last night, the rapper attended the 2022 NBA Finals in Los Angeles in an affordable pair of Puma sneakers. While daughter Blue Ivy donned a pair of ultra-hyped black and white “Panda” Nike Dunks, Jay-Z sported what appears to be an update to a pair of Ralph Sampson LO Perforated sneakers from Puma.
Simple in design, the sneakers were released earlier this year and are inspired by the playing shoes of former basketball player Ralph Sampson, who was big in the 80s. His signature doodle sits on the outside, while the sneakers have breathable holes on the upper and Puma’s signature curved appliqué detailing on the back. The sneakers were originally on sale for £65.99, while some sites were even selling them for as little as £29.99.
While he may have a billi in the bank, it’s hardly surprising that Jay-Z is championing a pair of Puma sneakers. For the past two years, he’s been working quietly in the background as Puma’s creative director of basketball. Therefore, he swapped the Nike x Supreme sneaks of his 4:44 days and has instead been seen in several Puma shoes on various occasions.
Sadly, its latest sneakers are no longer available (although we half expected Puma to give them a reissue after this appearance), but here are the kicks we can’t get enough of right now.
