Anyone who wants to get some fresh air and exercise will be able to do so when the third Thursday Fit Night debuts for 2022 this week.

Third Thursday Fit Night, sponsored by Brown Shoe Fit Co., offers runners and walkers the opportunity to run a five-mile course east of Fort Dodge.

Being a star athlete is not mandatory to participate.

“Any athletic ability can come to Fit Night,” said Craig Jarrard, owner and manager of Brown Shoe Fit Co.

“It’s not a race,” he said. “It’s not timed. We tried to focus more on the social aspect and just get out there and get moving.

As the name suggests, the walk/run takes place on the third Thursday of every month, starting in April and ending in October.

Participants gather at Brown Shoe Fit Co., 210 S. 25th St., around 5:30 p.m. The walk/run begins at 6 p.m.

The route goes south on 25th Street, east on Fifth Avenue South, north on 32nd Street, then west on 10th Avenue North to Fort Dodge Senior High School. In high school, participants will turn around and retrace their steps to the store. The full route is five miles, but people can hike any part of it they want.

Back at Brown Shoe Fit Co. there will be food and promotions from various local businesses.

The third Thursday Fit Night started in 2014.

“We wanted to go for a walk, run, do fitness,” Jarrard said.

He said that at that time, the sidewalks in the commercial area on the east side of town were brand new.

Since then, each Third Thursday Fit Night has attracted an average of 200 people, according to Jarrad.
